Concussions are most commonly associated with sports injuries, but if you had a slip and fall, auto accident, or other serious injury, you may also get a concussion. Sometimes called a traumatic brain injury, concussions are serious and require immediate medical attention.

We’ll explain more about what a concussion is, what the symptoms are, and concussion treatment in Lexington, KY.

What Is a Concussion?

A concussion occurs when your head experiences a sudden movement or jolt that causes the brain to bounce around within the skull, causing damage and injury to the brain. Some may think that a concussion is when your head receives an impact that causes unconcioussness; however, this is only part of the story when it comes to concussions. Did you know that less than 10% of concussed people actually lose consciousness. Then you can have the hidden concussion, also known as impulsed or inertial concussion. This is where you head does not hit anything, your body abruptly accelerates then decelerates, or vise versa, without impact. Your jelly-like brain still sloshes and bangs the inner ridges of the skull...BAM! Concussion.

Concussions affect nearly two million people annually in the United States alone, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Breaking down those numbers, here are the most common causes of concussions in percentages:

  • Slips and falls — 40.5 percent
  • Auto accidents — 14.3 percent

While 14.3 percent may sound like a small number, according to the CDC, it translates to 286,000 concussions.

What Are the Symptoms of a Concussion?

Concussions can affect you on both cognitive, physical, and emotional levels. The symptoms you experience right away will give way to a second round of symptoms as the days progress. That’s why it’s important you receive concussion treatment as soon as you recognize the symptoms.

Those symptoms are as follows.

Short-term symptoms:

  • Difficulty remembering
  • More emotional than usual
  • Feelings of disorientation
  • Incoherent and slurred speech
  • Slower response times
  • Vacant staring and other signs of slower attention span

Long-term symptoms:

  • Inability to sleep or stay asleep
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Irritation at loud sounds and bright lights
  • More easily angered
  • Tired more often
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Continued issues with memory
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Vertigo and general wooziness
  • Recurring headaches

Auto Accident Injury Treatment

Auto accident injury treatment for a concussion can address and reduce these symptoms. A chiropractor trained in concussions will pick up on what emergency room doctors sometimes don’t. In fact, in 85 percent of cases, ER doctors don’t correctly diagnose a patient with a concussion, even though the patient has one.
