There are no good places to sustain an injury in an auto accident, but the spine, which supports your body and houses your spinal cord, is surely one of the most worrying. The good news is that A. Bastecki Chiropractic and Wellness Center can treat many kinds of auto accident spinal damage through natural, non-invasive means, thus sparing you the additional anxieties over major surgery.

Car Accidents and the Spine

There are a number of ways your spine can be damaged in an auto accident and a number of points in the spine where that damage might occur. These include:

  • Whiplash - The cervical spine supports the neck and head -- and in an auto accident, it's extremely vulnerable to a problem called whiplash. The weight of the head sends it flying around in an impact, flexing the neck beyond its natural capabilities. This can upset your cervical alignment and cause disc/joint damage.
  • Facet joint strain - The facet joints not only allow your spine to move, but they also connect the vertebrae to each other. If an auto collision pushes your vertebrae out of alignment, these joints can suffer severe strain, leaving with a stiff, painful spine.
  • Herniated discs - When the discs that cushion the vertebrae are dislodged from their normal position in an auto accident, they may herniate, developing a tear in the outer casing that allows the inflammatory inner "gel" to protrude. This condition be extremely painful, not only in the disc itself but in surrounding nerve tissues that come into contact with it.
  • Sciatic nerve impingement - A herniated disc in the lower part of the spine can pinch lumbar or sacral spinal nerve roots, the main conduits connecting the spinal cord to the sciatic nerve. This can produce sciatica, a source of leg pain, weakness, and numbness/tingling of a leg or foot.
  • Compression fractures - Sometimes an auto accident impact can cause a vertebra to collapse inward, a form of damage known as a compression fracture. This change alters your vertebral alignment, possibly reducing space within your spinal canal (spinal stenosis) and pinching spinal nerve tissue as a result.
